What Windbag is

Windbag is open-source desktop software for composing, scheduling and publishing posts to social platforms. It is distributed under the MIT licence. It is a tool you run; it is not a hosted service, and there is no account to register.

Using it means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use it.

Your accounts stay yours

Windbag acts on your behalf using credentials you supply. You are responsible for:

  • The developer applications you register. Most platforms require you to register your own application and paste its credentials into Windbag. That application is yours, it is registered to you, and you are bound by the developer terms of whichever platform issued it.
  • Everything published through it. Windbag does not review, moderate or filter content. Posts go out as you wrote them, to the destinations you chose, at the times you set.
  • Complying with each platform's rules. Every destination has its own terms, its own acceptable use policy and its own rate limits. Scheduling a post through Windbag does not exempt it from any of them. Automated posting, cross-posting and bulk publishing are restricted or prohibited on some platforms; that is between you and them.
  • Any costs you incur. At least one platform charges per post against your own developer application. Windbag does not bill you and cannot see your balance.

What Windbag does not promise

Scheduling requires the app to be running. Windbag has no server. A post scheduled for a time when the application is not running is not sent at that time. Depending on your settings it is either sent late or marked as missed. This is a property of the design, not a defect.

Publishing can also fail for reasons entirely outside the software: an expired token, a revoked permission, a platform outage, a rate limit, a rejected attachment, a changed API. Windbag reports these as clearly as it can, but it cannot guarantee that anything is published.

No warranty

The software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. This is the warranty disclaimer of the MIT licence, and it means what it says.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the authors and copyright holders are not liable for any claim, damages or other liability arising from the software or its use — including unpublished posts, missed schedules, content published in error, suspended platform accounts, or charges incurred against a developer application.

Third-party platforms

Bluesky, Mastodon, Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Threads, Instagram and Facebook are independent services. Windbag is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them. Their names and marks belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify the destination a post is going to. Access to any of them may change or be withdrawn at any time, by them.

Changes

These terms may be updated. Material changes will be published on this page with a new date above. Continuing to use the software after that constitutes acceptance.
